Mets Take Series Against Cubs After 8th Inning

The New York Mets faced the Chicago Cubs in game three of their three-game series this Sunday afternoon. After splitting the first two games, the Mets were looking to win the series.

Not only was it Mother’s Day, but it was Mets starting pitcher Griffin Canning’s birthday, and what better present than being able to pitch on your birthday at home?

Canning tossed six quality innings to pick up his sixth win of the season and lower his ERA to 2.36, allowing only one run on two hits and striking out five Cubs.

The Mets got their offense started by catcher Luis Torrens hitting an RBI triple in the bottom of the 2nd. The Mets’ offense stayed quiet until the bottom of the sixth inning when third baseman Mark Vientos lined a solo home run to put them back on top 2-1.

After the Cubs tied the game again in the top of the seventh on a Nico Hoerner RBI double, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor launched his ninth home run of the year to give them a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth, which sparked a four-run inning.

Mark Vientos picked up his second RBI of the game on a single up the middle, followed by a Brandon Nimmo two-run home run to cap off this huge inning.

Relief pitchers Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to secure the 6-2 win and effectively shut down this hot Chicago offense.

The Mets start a three-game series against Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow night as they look to win another series. The first pitch is set for 7:10 pm.
