Kamala Harris and Donald Trump had their first (and potentially last) presidential debate.
Polls indicate Harris performed better than Trump. Several days prior Dick Cheney endorsed Harris, warning that Trump “can never be trusted with power again.”
Edmundo González, the widely accepted winner of Venezuela’s presidential election, fled to Spain.
Incumbent Nicolás Maduro claims he won the election, despite evidence to the contrary, and has been arresting his opponents. González was a stand-in for María Corina Machado, a widely supported former congresswoman who the regime banned from running, who is also in exile.
Alberto Fujimori, a strongman who ruled Peru between 1990 and 2000, died aged 86.
In 1992 Fujimori sent tanks to shut down Peru’s Congress and ruled as an autocrat for the remainder of his tenure. In 2009 he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for corruption and human rights abuses.
