President Biden signed a $95bn military-aid package.
Of the aid, $61bn is to help Ukraine, while $17bn is for Israel. Some aid will also go to Taiwan. Congress passed the bill after six months of deadlock, with Republican hardliners calling for the removal of House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Voting in the world’s largest election began in India.
Narendra Modi, the prime minister, and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are expected to win a third term. Armed clashes and damage to voting machines were reported at several polling stations, where voting will be restarted.
Israel struck an Iranian air-defense system in retaliation for Iran’s attack on April 13th.
Earlier this month Iran and Israel exchanged missile strikes, ushering in fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East. Both sides, having made their point, let matters rest in the end.
