Buffalo Sports Calendar – April 8-14, 2024
UB Track and Field took a few medals home from the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational last Saturday, with freshman Jacob Brink getting the gold in the Men’s 1500m, junior Kevin Gabalski winning the Men’s 110m Hurdles, junior Allison Newton winning silver in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase, freshmen Amber McDonald and Sam Mellinger taking bronze in their respective 100m. Stephney Pryce and Julian Smith also just missed the podium, finishing 4th in each 400m.
The Bulls also dominated in the throwing events, with seniors Imanhi Sinclair and Caleb Nickens each winning gold in the Hammer Throw, senior Quinn Smith and sophomore Will Trembly finishing first and second in Men’s Discus, senior Jonathan Surdej taking gold in Men’s Shot Put (with freshmen Quintus Simmons and Bradley Johnson also rounding out the top six). Freshman Tyler Norton and junior Calvin Finger finished 2nd and 4th in the Men’s High Jump.
Elsewhere, women’s tennis keep winning, and men’s tennis keep losing, and the softball team continues to struggle. The Sabres are a game above .500, and while they’re still in the playoff running, six of the Eastern Conference’s eight playoff spots are taken; it’s unlikely the Sabres will shoot past five other teams to grab one of the remaining two. But we do get some playoff action at Riverworks, as Queen City Roller Derby heads into their postseason, with the 2nd-ranked Devil Dollies taking on the 3rd-place Alley Kats, and hoping for a rematch of last month’s game, in which the Dolls won 262-101. The winner takes on the undefeated Alley Kats on May 3rd.
