Renascence (UB Center for the Arts, Fri 7:30pm, Sat/Sun 2pm, $7)
This poetic musical is based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, who went from a humble rural upbringing to an adventurous bohemian life after her poem “Renascence” brought her literary stardom at age 19.

Moulin Rouge (Shea’s Buffalo, 650 Main St, Tue-Fri 7:30pm, Sat 2pm/8pm, Sun 1pm/6:30pm, through 11/5, $50-132)
Baz Luhrmann’s splashy 2001 musical comes to the stage, with a soundtrack updated for the 2020s.

Outer Harbor Views Bike Tour (2 Fuhrmann Blvd, 10-11:30am, $7)
This 10-mile bike ride runs along the waterfront.

Weird Phishes (Iron Works, 49 Illinois St, 8pm, $10/$12 day of, 18+)
This suprising tribute band plays Radiohead songs in the style of Phish.

Brittany Schmitt (Helium, 30 Mississippi St, 8pm, $22, 18+, 2 item minimum)
Schmitt just released her debut comedy special, From Ho to Housewife.

Friday, 10/27

The Rocky Horror Show (Kavinoky Theater, 320 Porter Ave, 10pm, Sat midnight, $47)
The campy cult classic midnight movie started off as a stage production, which Kavinoky revives. Special midnight performance on Saturday, and continues Thu/Fri/Sat through November 18.

A Gospel Symphony Celebration w/Donald Lawrence (Kleinhans, 3 Symphony Circle, 7:30pm, $17)
Grammy-winning singer and producer Lawrence performes with the Philharmonica and the Buffalo United Community Choir.

Calvin Stanley w/MXNX (Mohawk Place, 47 E Mohawk St, Fri/Sat 10pm, $19.50)
Calvin Stanley is the techno project of bass music artist Baku.

Dan Cummins (Helium, 30 Mississippi St, Fri/Sat 7:30 & 10pm, $39, 18+, 2 item minimum)
Stand-up and podcaster Cummins is on his “Burn It All Down” tour, following his third one-hour special, Get Outta Here Devil!

Live Band Karaoke (Rec Room, 79 W Chippewa St, 10pm, $8 day of, 21+)

New Releases This Week

Five Nights at Freddy’s (in wide release)
The horror video game series gets a big-screen adaptation. With Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Matthew Lillard, and Mary Stuart Masterson.

Freelance (in wide release)
An ex-Special Forces ranger (John Cena) and a journalist (Alison Brie) have to survive the jungle together in this action-comedy.

Fingernails (Amazon)
Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed star in this sci-fi romance.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (in wide release)
Henry Selick’s stop-motion classic (yes, the director of Coraline and James and the Giant Peach directed this, not Tim Burton), returns to the big screen for its 30th anniversary.

Saturday 10/28

Nick Shoulders and the Okay Crawdad (Iron Works, 49 Illinois St, 7pm, $20/$25 day of, 18+)
Shoulders plays country and roots music with a punk spirit. With opener Maddy Kirgo.

Mohawk Halloween Party (Mohawk Place, 47 E Mohawk St, 7-11pm, $15)
Music from the Cloves, Shannon and the Likely Lads, and DJ Grimetime, plus burlesque performances from Kerry Fey, Sweet Tooth, Ruby Riot, SugaTush, and Venus Bi-Trap.

EA Halloween Party (Electric Avenue, 300 Ellicott St, 8-11pm, $10)
Tributes to the Cranberries, Galaxie 500, the Violent Femmes, Green Day, and more.

Songbirds of the Sixties (MusicalFare Theatre, 4380 Main St, Amherst, Sat 8pm, Sun 2:00pm, $25)
The TLC Trio bring their harmonies to a cabaret featuring the music of Aretha Franklin, the Ronettes, the Supremes, Dusty Springfield, the Supremes, and other favorites from the ’60s.

Rubblebucket have brought their psychedelic pop, funk, and dance everywhere from Glastonbury to Bonnaroo.

Monday 10/30

Riverline Ride (Briar Brothers Brewing, 50 Elk St, 6-10pm, FREE)
The 10 mile roundtrip bike ride through several Buffalo neighborhoods includes two stops, and ends with an afterparty with food, drink, and music.

Tuesday 10/31

Songbirds (Iron Works, 49 Illinois St, 7pm, $10/$15 day of, 18+)
This Fleetwood Mac tribute act has significantly less interpersonal drama and cocaine use than the originals, if for no other reason than it would be impossible to have more.

Daggermind w/Lacerate, Lobotomite, Little Liar (Mohawk Place, 47 E Mohawk St, 7pm, $10/$13 day of)
Three appropriately gruesome hard rock acts for Halloween.

Wednesday 11/1

The Mid-Week Vibe (9th Ward, 341 Delaware Ave, 7pm, $30)
This month’s vibe features comedian Yolanda Smilez, an acoustic performance by Chelse Chambers, and featured artist Joy Little, plus a cash bar and free pizza and wings while supplies last.

Hold My Headache 35th Anniversary Show (Mohawk Place, 47 E Mohawk St, 7pm, $10)
With Market Research, West Ferry, Psyche Chain, and The Uncanny Valley.
