Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian operatives were responsible for the assassination of a Sikh leader near Vancouver in June.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar had been an advocate for a Sikh homeland in India; India called him a terrorist, while his supporters maintain he was a peaceful activist. Trudeau’s allegation of a fellow democracy assassinating a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil has broader implications than a straining of relations with India. The US National Security Council has urged India to cooperate, stating that it is “deeply concerned.”
Volodymyr Zelensky gave a speech to the UN General Assembly warning that Russia is trying to erode the established international order and push the world to a “final war.”
Zelensky also compared Russia’s kidnapping of Ukrainian children to genocide. Zelensky then traveled to Washington to discuss further aid for Ukraine’s war effort.
Iran and America each swapped five prisoners.
The US also released $6 billion worth of frozen Iranian assets. Shortly after the deal was announced, Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi accused America of inflaming violence in Ukraine in an address to the UN General Assembly.
