More than 5,300 died after floods burst two dams near the Libyan port city of Derna.
Thousands more in Derna have gone missing. Just three days earlier, at least 2,900 were killed in Morocco after the worst earthquake in more than a century hit near Marrakech. Governments will need to be better prepared for climate disasters, as climate models predict that warming will bring fiercer Mediterranean cyclones, in addition to growing wildfires.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced the start of an impeachment investigation into President Biden.
McCarthy claims the President lied about the activities of his son, Hunter Biden. The investigation is supported by far-right Republicans.
Senator Mitt Romney announced he will retire when his term ends.
“Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders,” Romney stated. The message may have been aimed toward Biden, who is 80, and Trump, who is 77.
