Ron DeSantis launched his campaign for president.
The Florida governor announced his candidacy in an audio conversation with Elon Musk on Twitter, however technical glitches ensued for the first 20 minutes. DeSantis promised to revitalize America and criticized President Biden for being woke.
The G7 held a summit in Hiroshima, which was dominated by discussions on collectively tackling China and Russia.
The forum criticized China for its human rights violations, aggression in Taiwan and the South China Sea, and economic coercion. The group adopted a strategy of “de-risking” the West’s trade and financial links with China. It also announced new sanctions on Russia, and vowed to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes.”
The EU fined Meta €1.2bn ($1.3bn) for failing to comply with its privacy rules.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, one of the EU’s privacy watchdogs, said that Facebook did not properly protect the data of European users against American surveillance programs. The fine is the largest to be imposed on a big tech company in the EU.
