What’s Good 12/22-28

Our weekly guide to what’s going on around Buffalo and in the world of pop culture (which isn’t much this week, as Kris Kringle has shut down the music scene until the new year)

Friday, 12/23

New Movies This Week:

I Wanna Dance with Somebody (in wide release)
Whitney Houston has to think about her whole life before she hits the high notes in I Will Always Love You and a multitude of other hits in this by-the-numbers biopic.

Babylon (in wide release)
Damien Chazelle returns to La La Land with this look at the hedonistic last days of the silent film era. The overstuffed film’s overstuffed cast includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire, Max Minghella, Samara Weaving, and Olivia Wilde.

Avatar: The Way of Water (in wide release)
If you have a very specific fetish for half-naked pregnant blue alien cat women, then boy have we got the movie for you. Or maybe you just want to bask in James Cameron’s eye-popping all-CGI visuals without having to think too hard about things like character or plot.

Sunday, 12/25

Jews Go To the Movies Day (celebrated worldwide)
The eighth night of Hanukkah coincides with this other important holiday, in which it’s easy to get a great seat at the movies because lots of people are otherwise occupied. Which works out because, as you can see from this week’s abbreviated listings, there’s nothing going on in town this week but family togetherness, shoveling, and the big screen.

Monday 12/26

Letterkenny (Hulu)
Take a break from dealing with your dysfunctional family by laughing along with the residents of this dysfunctional small town as the acclaimed Canadian small-town sitcom returns for its 11th season.
